THIS SEMINAR IS 4 DAYS LONG (2 x 2 DAYS). 

AN ADDITIONAL 2 DAYS IS AVAILABLE FOR CANINE PROFESSIONALS, PLEASE BOOK AT THE SAME TIME TO SECURE YOUR SPACE.

The event will involve lectures, Q&A and practical workstations.

Overview of the topics per session:

Session 1: Monday 7 & Tuesday 8 June 2021

  • The development of normal behaviour in the young puppy. What affects brain and body development?
  • What do puppies need compared to what adult dogs need? 
  • What is the influence of the environment on the development of the puppy? 
  • Attachment Theory: How can we maximize attachment to build good relationships with people and other dogs?
  • How does body language develop in the puppy? Is there a difference in body language between that of the puppy and that of the adult dog?
  • Play! What can they learn from this? How can this influence eg bite inhibition? Can they play too much? When should you intervene as a breeder?
  • Preparing puppies for weaning and for departure to the new home (incl. transport to it).
  • Visiting the vet - microchipping, vaccinations, worming: how can we minimize stress and anxiety? 

Session 2: Monday 5 & Tuesday 6 July 2021

  • Preparing the house for the new puppy. Toilet training and good sleeping habits. 
  • Introduction to other dogs and cats of the family. 
  • Good bonding with the new owners. What are the factors that can influence separation anxiety? 
  • Play: puppy - human. What are the best games? 
  • Selecting a good puppy school.
  • Puppy learning: reward vs punishment, habituation, how can the breeder influence the pup's learning potential?
  • Learning through observation. Can you use other dogs to teach the puppy something? 
  • Expanding their world. Socialization and enriched environments. 
  • Sterilisation/castration? What should you think about before making a decision? 

 

Amber Batson graduated as a vet from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1999. She has always been very interested in animal behaviour and began a number of studies in animal behaviour alongside her medical career within the first year of graduation. Amber has worked with international charities to promote animal welfare, works as a legal expert witness in relation to behaviour and welfare, offers private behaviour consultations and continues to work in first opinion vet practice as well as delivering education in behaviour worldwide. Her goal is to clarify the scientific knowledge of behaviour in a practical way, to ensure up to date science is accessible to all. She hopes to contribute to the prevention of behaviour problems by practical application of this science.

 

Venue: The seminar will be held at Bowden Hall Hotel, Bondend Lane, Upton St Leonards, Gloucester GL4 8ED. Mondays 10am-5pm, Tuesdays 9am- 4pm.

Refreshments: Refreshments and lunch will be provided. 

Not Local? A delegate bed and breakfast rate of £85 per night is available. Please book direct with the hotel.

Covid-19: the seminar will be run in accordance with Government guidelines in place at the time. If the seminar cannot be run 'in person', the event will be transferred to an online platform.
